The Montenegrin Government said Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapic received the support of European Union ministers in Brussels on Tuesday for the economic reform program 'Europe Now' and the investment program 'Montenegro Now,' which the Government in Podgorica intended to accelerate the country's accession to the EU.
„As a credible member of NATO, we want to use our position in the Alliance for a stronger political dialogue at the level of the EU. The accession process for us is a period of work on internal reforms and strengthening of our institutions. Even though the negotiations last for nine years, due to the lack of political will of our predecessors to speed up the process, we have a very high level of citizen support for European integration, and it increased by over ten percent after the election of the new Government,“ Krivokapic said.
He added that „ministers praised the Government’s efforts to fight corruption and organised crime and reiterated their full support for Montenegro’s EU integration. Montenegro’s careful attitude when it comes to good neighbourly relations and full foreign policy compliance with the EU’s foreign and security policy was also affirmatively assessed.“
Krivokapic said that his Government was determined to do everything for full membership in the EU.
He informed his interlocutors about the current situation in Montenegro, especially in the context of European integration, which was the main strategic and foreign policy priority of the new Government.
„We do not have and are not looking for an alternative to the EU. The lack of progress in certain segments of the accession process may have left room for different, ill-intentioned interpretations. However, it should be remembered that Montenegro had gone through a process of democratic transition in a short time, and accordingly changed part of the personnel structure for conducting negotiations and started the reform process on several tracks,“ Krivokapic said.
