S&D MEPs appaled by reports of wiretapping of Russian opposition

January 12, 2021
The Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats said that it was appalled by reports of the Serbian authorities wiretapping Russian opposition officials.
“We are appalled by this disturbing news. Serbia as a EU candidate country has to uphold human rights, but here it is collaborating with an autocratic regime in the persecution of Russian opposition,” the second larges MEP group said on in a Twitter post.
Earlier on Wednesday, N1 and Nova.rs reported Russian opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza as saying that members of the Russian opposition were wiretapped during the meeting in Belgrade and that Serbia’s Interior Minister Aleksandar Vulin handed over the transcripts of the talks to Moscow. Vulin denied the claim and said he would sue Kara-Murza.
The Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament has 46 members from 25 European Union member states.
