EU Ambassador says Europeans obliged to help refugees

June 20, 2022

European Union Ambassador Emanuele Giaufret said on Monday that Europeans are obliged to show solidarity with refugees.

“As Europeans, we have an obligation to show solidarity and help refugees seeking protection. Serbia and its citizens have traditionally been welcoming and sympathetic towards the refugees, which we strongly value. We also appreciate all positive steps the Serbian authorities undertook towards the refugees from Ukraine,” the head of the EU Delegation said in comments on World Refugee Day.

He said that Serbia is giving refugees from Ukraine the same level of protection as EU member states.

An EU Delegation press release said that the EU will continue to cooperate with Serbian institutions on migration and provide support in Serbia’s accession to the EU. “Priorities in the coming period remain effective border control and improving the conditions in which refugees live in Serbia,” it said.
