Montenegrin MPs harassed by Serbian border police

June 20, 2022

Two Montenegrin MPs said that they were harassed by Serbian border police before being allowed to cross the border.

Democratic Montenegro MP Danilo Saranovic and Bosniak Party MP Amer Smailovic said that they were stopped and searched and kept waiting for a long time. Both men said they were with their families.

The behavior of the Serbian border police was condemned on Tuesday by Montenegro Parliament Speaker Danijela Djurovic who said that behavior is not good for relations between the two countries. “I condemn the holding of MPs Amer Smailovic and Danilo Saranovic at the Serbian border and the unpleasant situation they were exposed to… This kind of thing is not good for overall friendly and good neighbor relations between Montenegro and Serbia, especially since this is something that keeps happening,” she said in a Twitter post.

The harassment was also condemned by Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) MP Dusko Markovic who said this was “a premeditated long-term form of pressure by official Serbia on Montenegrin politicians and must not be left without a clear reaction,” he said, adding that this is a clear sign of a lack of respect for Montenegro and its institutions.

Media reported several similar incidents involving Montenegrin MPs on the Serbian border over the past year.
