June 22, 2022

The newly-elected head of the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) told N1 on Wednesday that the situation in Serbian journalism is “fairly dramatic”.

EFJ Steering Committee President Maja Sever said that Serbian professional journalists’ organizations are doing a very good job. “By cooperating we can strengthen the struggle and improve protection for the independence of the profession in your country (Serbia). That is what I hope for. I also hope that we will try to protect journalists and improve their working conditions,” she said.

She said that safety is the priority for European journalists’ organizations because of the war in Ukraine which has claimed the lives of several journalists. She added that safety for journalists in peacetime conditions because of assaults on reporters a protests and daily online attacks and threats. The EFJ will also fight against pressure, censorship, self-censorship and political and economic pressure, she said.

“The problem is also the way politicians behave towards journalists. Top officials often attack and insult journalist if they don’t like questions and when the public sees that the president or prime minister can do that it becomes easier for them to try to silence journalists,” Sever warned.
