Albanians protest against discrimination in southern Serbia

August 31, 2023

The deputy Mayor of the southern Serbian town of Bujanovac blocked access to the local health care center protesting discrimination against ethnic Albanians.

The town of Bujanovac has a majority ethnic Albanian population.

Deputy Mayor Shqiprim Musliu lead a group of about a dozen people holding signs in Albanian and Serbia saying Discrimination Center. The same signs were placed in front of the health care center in nearby Presevo. The protest was staged amid allegations that the health care center was not hiring enough Albanians. The leader of the Albanian National Council Nevzad Lutfiu said that the protest was a symbolic activity against discrimination. He said he has nothing against the hiring of Serbs and Roma but that jobs should be given to local Albanians instead of people from outside the community.

Health Care Center CEO Daliborka Pavlovic denied that Albanians were being discriminated in the hiring process, adding that the criteria for hiring was expertise and the needs of the center, not ethnicity.
