SNS says Mayor of Novi Sad under threat

The ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) said on Friday that Novi Sad Mayor Milan Djuric received “monstrous threats” on social media.

“The threats sent to Novi Sad Mayor Milan Djuric today on social networks can only be the act of a twisted mind. No one in our city and state deserves this, least of all Mayor Djuric,” the SNS said in a statement. Djuric is a member of the SNS.

The statement accused the opposition of “continuing its introduction of violence into everyday political communication and its activities” and called the judiciary to protect the mayor. The statement did not specify the threats.

Civil society activists tried to hand the mayor a bullet-proof vest in front of a school on Thursday. The activists said they were concerned about safety in schools following last May’s mass shooting in a Belgrade school.
