Von Cramon-Visa liberalization should not be linked to Kosovo-Serbia dialogue

September 2, 2023

The European Parliament’s Kosovo rapporteur, Viola von Cramon, stated that visa liberalization for citizens of Kosovo should not be linked to the dialogue process between Kosovo and Serbia.

„The citizens of Kosovo deserve the long-awaited visa liberalization. We want to be clear – visa-free travel is not and should not be associated with dialogue with Serbia. The EU must keep its promise to the citizens of Kosovo to travel freely from January 1, 2024,“ she wrote on the „X“ social network.

Her reaction comes after the statement of French President Emmanuel Macron, who recently said that the decision on visa liberalization can be suspended if the parties in the dialogue are not responsible.

„France and Germany have made their promises on visa policy and other economic issues, which will be reviewed if both sides do not behave responsibly. We have to be very careful in this regard, especially when the stability of the Western Balkans is threatened,“ Macron said.

The EU institutions announced a few months ago that Kosovo citizens will travel without visas from January 1, 2024.
