Kosovo Serbs protest Euro regulation in Mitrovica

February 12, 2024

Kosovo Serbs gathered in Mitrovica North on Monday to protest Pristina’s decision to make the Euro the only legal currency, effectively banning the Dinar.

An N1 reporter said that the crowd carried Serbian flags and banners. The protest started at noon with the intoning of the Serbian national anthem.

The protest which the KoSSev news portal said was attended by several thousand people was organized by the Alliance of Pensioners of Kosovo and Metohija with the support of the Belgrade-backed Serb List party.

A large number of Serbs in the four northern municipalities where they make up a majority depend on income in Dinars from Serbian institutions. The Central Bank of Kosovo regulation which came into effect on February 1 means that they will now have to exchange Dinars for Euro and pay commissions on the transactions. The Kosovo authorities have seized shipments of cash in Dinars intended for ATMs in the northern municipalities.

N1’s reporter said that the Dinar was still the main currency used in Serb-majority communities.
