Schieder- EU considering how to organize investigation into Serbian elections

February 12, 2024

Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and international observer at Serbia’s December elections Andreas Schieder told Nova.rs that the European Commission and European Council take the European Parliament (EP) Resolution on Serbian elections seriously, and are weighing how to organize an independent investigation.

Following the adoption of the EP Resolution, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) is also expected to publish a report on the Serbian December elections.

Schieder said he expect this report to also be critical of the parliamentary elections, but that it will be somewhat more “technical” than the EP resolution, that is, that it will contain a description of the election irregularities.

Of course, the European Parliament also sent a clear signal for the future, requesting an independent investigation into the allegations of irregularities, Schieder told Nova. rs.

The MEP said that the Serbian authorities’ claims following the publication of the EP Resolution on the Serbian elections that the opposition representatives were “traitors” and “fifth columnists,” and that foreigners are blackmailing Serbia, indicate that the regime in Belgrade is nervous.
