Bujanovac Municipal Council declares Tirana Mayor honorary citizen

February 12, 2024

The Albanian majority in the Bujanovac Municipal Council, southern Serbia, declared the mayor of the Albanian capital of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, an honorary citizen of Bujanovac.

Two Serbian councilors and two councilors of the Roma community did not attend the meeting, reported the portal Bujanovacke.

The proposal to grant the title of honorary citizen to Veliaj, submitted by Municipal Council head Enver Ramadani, was backed by 23 councilors.

The Serbians boycotted the Monday meeting insisting that the proposal was not submitted in a legal procedure, and voicing suspicion that the motive behind the proposal is scoring political points ahead of the local election, reported the portal.

Prior to the vote on the proposal, Bujanovac Mayor Nagip Arifi and his colleagues stressed Veliaj’s immense contribution to the Bujanovac municipality and ethnic Albanian populations, and the reasons in favor of him being granted the title.

They highlighted, in particular, Tirana’s donation of 550,000 euros for the construction of a gym at a Bujanovac elementary school.

Although adopted, the Bujanovac Municipal Council decision is not valid without approval by the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, reported Bujanovacke.
