Priebe- Objective report into Serbian elections needed

Former European Commission Director for the Western Balkans Reinhard Priebe told N1 on Tuesday that an objective report on the mid-December elections is needed to see what was good and what wasn’t.

He said that the Serbian authorities should not view the criticism about the elections as inappropriate interference in the country’s internal affairs, adding that part of the European Community’s job is to check the progress made by candidate countries. He recalled that this is not the first time that the Commission has criticized elections in a country aspiring to become a European Union member.

From my point of view, the the most important thing is to assess the situation, he said adding that the efforts by the Serbian authorities should be based on the ODIHR report. He said official Belgrade should introduce measure to deal with what did not work at the elections and prevent a repeat of the irregularities.

He warned against inflammatory statements. We need an objective assessment … and I think that is the intention of the European Parliament, he added. Priebe said the European Parliament resolution is cause for concern because it criticizes in detail and openly the Serbian elections.
