Opposition councilors claim to be under pressure from Serbian ruling party

September  4, 2019

Local politicians in one of only three municipalities not under the control of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) have appealed to state and international organizations, saying that they are under constant threats and blackmail.

In an open letter to the public, members of the Paracin municipal assembly said that the local SNS branch, police and prosecutors were pressuring and blackmailing them every day. The letter was adopted by the municipal assembly on Tuesday.

The letter said that the police had been brought into the political struggle, adding that evidence of non-existent crimes had been fabricated and confessions extorted. The councilor also cited examples of retribution, threats of arrest and the destruction of companies, empowering people not in the state administration or police to act in some cases as well as media manipulation and censorship.

The letter alleged that all those methods were being used to alter the local authorities and prevent SNS political rivals from taking part in elections.
