March 25, 2020

The European Union has approved Serbia to transfer some 94 million Euro of the unused money from the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance, IPA, funds to fight the new coronavirus pandemic, the Beta news agency carried the country’s Government statement on Wednesday.

Jadranka Joksimovic, Serbia’s Minister of European Integration, wrote to Oliver Várhelyi, the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, asking that unused IPA funds were redirected for measures to suppress the consequences of the pandemic.

In his reply, Várhelyi said that the European Commission (EC) and the EU Delegation in Serbia were taking “activities to secure timely and comprehensive support of Serbia’s Government’s efforts to prevent the spreading of the virus.”

He said he approved 94 million Euro from IPA funds for that purpose 15 million of which from urgent needs in the ongoing projects and contract with the UNDP and UNOPS, and that it would be considered to add almost 21 million Euro from the Program for Support of European Integration.

Várhelyi said there was a possibility of the additional 57.6 million Euro to be redirected to the health care system and healing the social-economic consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.
