The organization for protecting human rights Amnesty International (AI) described Serbia's Finance Minister Department for Preventing Money Laundering and Financing Terrorism move to check the accounts of the country's journalists and NGOs as "an undoubted act of intimidation," by the authorities, the Beta news agency reported on Wednesday.
"Targeting the journalists and NGOs with absurd accusations about money laundering and financing terrorism is undisputable intimidation and the last (example) in current Serbia's authorities campaign of suffocating criticism," Nils Muižnieks, the AI Director for Europe said.
He added that "such arbitrary investigation specifically aiming at those critical about the authoritiesundermines the right to freedom of expression and jeopardises the freedom of the press."
"Such investigations must be dismissed," Muižnieks said.
