The European Parliament’s rapporteur for Serbia Vladimir Bilcik MEP on Thursday welcomed the Serbian government’s decision to suspend participation in joint military exercises with other countries and denied that he is to blame for the decision.
“Public information about the military exercise “Slavic Brotherhood 2020” including soldiers from Belarus, Russia and Serbia raised natural questions among members of the European Parliament considering the difficult political situation in Belarus today. I can therefore only welcome the decision by the Serbian Government not to participate in military exercises during upcoming six months,” Bilcik said, adding that .
“As many EU leaders welcomed Serbia’s support for the EU's Declaration on Presidential Elections in Belarus, it is also important to note that such political decisions have tangible and practical implications,” he said, adding that i”t is important that Serbia aligns with EU foreign policy actively and automatically”.
“I find media speculation about one person’s impact on Serbia’s sovereign decision an absurd drama, which makes no sense in a country that has clearly made its own strategic choice to work fully on its European perspective,” Bilcik said commenting claims in the Serbian press that he was to blame for the government decision to suspend participation in military exercises with other countries.
