Kosovo Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti said in Brussels on Thursday that mutual recognition is the only reason that Pristina agreed to the dialogue with Belgrade.
He told the European Parliament Foreign Policy Committee that Pristina will implement its obligations from the dialogue, including the forming of a Community of Serb Municipalities, but only once the dialogue process is over.
“We clearly stated that we are starting the process to reach a final comprehensive agreement to fully normalize relations between Kosovo and Serbia. Full normalization can only be achieved through mutual recognition and we are fully committed to that. I see no other solution,” he said adding that Pristina is interested in a lasting, not a long-term solution. According to him, only mutual recognition can calm the situation in the region and close the door to influence from the East. “I think that is important to the European Union as well,” he said.
The Kosovo Prime Minister said that the latest round of talks also raised the issue of finances which includes succession and war reparations.
Marko Djuric, head of the Serbian government’s Office for Kosovo, reacted immediately to Hoti’s statement saying that there will be no agreement if Pristina does not fully implement the agreement on the Community of Serb Municipalities. “Any conditions set on the implementation of what has been agreed in Brussels makes the project meaningless, he said.
