Jerusalem Post: Israel makes sharp turn in Balkans, it's big mistake

September 11, 2020

By recognizing Kosovo, Israel has made a colossal mistake in the Balkans which doesn't only offend the history, bit undermines Israeli national interests and is likely to backfire, Michael Freund, the president of Israeli-Serbia Friendship, writes for the 'Jerusalem Post' on Friday.

He says that Israeli media have published the news "with excitement and joy," but warns "one should not believe the decision was wise"

"It's a sharp turn of Israeli course, Freund writes, because "for the last 12 years since Kosovo illegally and unilaterally declared separated from Serbia, Israeli has refused to recognize independent Kosovo out of principles and good reasons."

He added that Kosovo was "a part of Serbia, legally and constitutionally.

"Supporting the secession is interfering with domestic policy, what can rarely be a wise move," Freund said.

He adds Kosovo is of the same importance to Serbia as Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) are for the Jews – the cradle of the nation."

"Israeli recognition of Kosovo offends Serbia and threatens to cast a shadow over the improved relationship between the two countries," Freund warned.

He added that was "a dangerous precedent because if Kosovars can unilaterally create their state, why could not the Palestinians in Judea or Israeli Arabs in Galilea?
